The Overlooked Importance of Regular Dental Check Ups

Posted on

Most adults know that it's good to get regular dental check ups at least every year, if not twice per year. These check ups can find early signs of cavities and have them filled and addressed quickly so they don't become worse, and they ensure your teeth get a thorough cleaning. While this is one of the best reasons to get a dental check up, there are many other reasons why visiting your dentist regularly is very important. Note the following.

1. Oral cancer

Oral cancer may not be as common as other forms of cancer, but it's still good to have your dentist check your mouth regularly for signs of this disease. This is especially important for smokers and those who may have increased risk of oral cancer, including cancer of the tongue or throat. Your dentist can note if you have sores or other irritations in the mouth that should be tested for cancer cells and then ensure you get early treatment if needed.

2. Acid reflux disease

If you get regular bouts of what you think is simple heartburn, you may treat it with antacids until it subsides. However, if you have acid reflux disease, meaning your stomach acids regurgitate back up your esophagus, this can be very serious for your overall health. Those acids can damage the esophagus permanently. In some cases, this acid can even reach your mouth and cause tooth erosion and damage to the enamel of your teeth. Your dentist can note if you have this damage and, in turn, alert you to the seriousness of this condition so you can get it treated properly and protect your digestive and oral health.

3. Oral hygiene

While your dentist can give your teeth a good cleaning when you visit his or her office, you also need to take care of your teeth at home, in between those visits. A dental visit can mean examining signs of neglect of your oral hygiene, improper flossing that is actually causing damage to your gums, teeth that you may be missing with the toothbrush, and so on. Note that this can protect you from neglecting your teeth and from being too exuberant with brushing and flossing, which can be just as damaging. Since only your dentist can tell you if you're taking good care of your teeth and mouth, it's good to have regular check ups so you can get personalized advice on how to care for your teeth.
